PERF constantly strives to publish the latest research and guidance on the issues of greatest concern to police executives. In recent years, for example, PERF has convened high-level summits and conducted research on issues like immigration enforcement, use of Electronic Control Weapons, the impact of the economic recession on policing, the future of broadband wireless communications in policing, gun- and gang-related crime, policing major events such as national political conventions, and strategies for reversing spikes in violent crime. PERF publishes the results of this work and disseminates the findings to PERF members as well as to the news media and the public.

The published products help police executives confronting a new challenge to benefit from the knowledge and experiences of their colleagues across the nation, so all may consider and deploy strategies that show the greatest potential for successfully addressing their local concerns.
PERF publications also are used in police and citizen academies, for police promotion exams, and in university courses—ensuring that the information is being delivered to those who can make a difference in improving community safety.
In addition to publishing and distributing books and reports, since 1987 PERF has published a monthly newsletter, Subject to Debate, which describes cutting-edge programs and challenges readers with provocative debate on public safety issues. Issues dating back to 2001 are available to PERF members
